Laravel 9 Database Backup with Spatie Tutorial Example

Using this laravel database backup tutorial, we are going to share how to take database backup with Spatie in Laravel application. The Laravel spatie package is best to take database backup easy way.

The Spatie eloquently helps you take the Laravel application backup in minutes. You can take database backup every day, weekly or monthly automatically with this package. It creates a zip file backup, which holds all the primitive directory, files and most importantly, the database dump of your application.

Let’s see the example how to set automatic database backup in laravel 5, laravel 6, laravel 7, laravel 8 and laravel 9 application.

Laravel 9 Database Dump using Spatie Package

  • Step 1: Install Laravel App
  • Step 2: Connect Database to App
  • Step 3: Install Laravel Spatie Package
  • Step 4: Register Service Provider
  • Step 5: Configure Backup in Laravel
  • Step 6: Take Secure Backup

Install Laravel App

First we install the new laravel application using the following command, copy and run in your terminall and generate a laravel 9 app.

composer create-project laravel/laravel --prefer-dist laravel-app

Go to into laravel app.

cd laravel-app

Connect Database to App

Now open you .env file and update your database credentials for connecting app with database.

DB_CONNECTION=mysql
DB_HOST=localhost
DB_PORT=3306
DB_DATABASE=laravel_db
DB_USERNAME=root
DB_PASSWORD=

Install Spatie Package

This Laravel package creates a backup of your application. The backup is a zip file that contains all files in the directories you specify along with a dump of your database. The backup can be stored on any of the filesystems you have configured in Laravel.

Let’s install the laravel backup package in your application running the following command:

composer require spatie/laravel-backup

After execution, the PHP artisan command spatie sends the mail regarding backup; you have to define the email where you want to receive info about the backup.

Add the mail address in the .env file.

MAIL_FROM_ADDRESS=admin@gmail.com
MAIL_FROM_NAME="${APP_NAME}"

Register Service Provider

In this step, you will register the service provider, get inside the config/app.php file, look for package service providers and carefully insert the BackupServiceProvider class.

'providers' => [
    ...
    ...
    ...
    Spatie\Backup\BackupServiceProvider::class,
];

Set Up Backup in Laravel

To begin with Backup in Laravel, make sure to publish the config file to config/laravel-backup.php.

To complete this task, execute the given command.

php artisan vendor:publish --provider="Spatie\Backup\BackupServiceProvider"

Here is the file that you can check to view the default contents of the backup configuration.

<?php
return [
    'backup' => [
        /*
         * The name of this application. You can use this name to monitor
         * the backups.
         */
        'name' => env('APP_NAME', 'laravel-backup'),
        'source' => [
            'files' => [
                /*
                 * The list of directories and files that will be included in the backup.
                 */
                'include' => [
                    base_path(),
                ],
                /*
                 * These directories and files will be excluded from the backup.
                 *
                 * Directories used by the backup process will automatically be excluded.
                 */
                'exclude' => [
                    base_path('vendor'),
                    base_path('node_modules'),
                ],
                /*
                 * Determines if symlinks should be followed.
                 */
                'follow_links' => false,
                /*

                 * This path is used to make directories in resulting zip-file relative

                 * Example: base_path()
                 */
                'relative_path' => null,
            ],
            /*
             * The names of the connections to the databases that should be backed up
             * MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite and Mongo databases are supported.
             *
             * The content of the database dump may be customized for each connection
             * by adding a 'dump' key to the connection settings in config/database.php.
             * E.g.
             * 'mysql' => [
             *       ...
             *      'dump' => [
             *           'excludeTables' => [
             *                'table_to_exclude_from_backup',
             *                'another_table_to_exclude'
             *            ]
             *       ],
             * ],
             *
             * If you are using only InnoDB tables on a MySQL server, you can
             * also supply the useSingleTransaction option to avoid table locking.
             *
             * E.g.
             * 'mysql' => [
             *       ...
             *      'dump' => [

             *       ],
             * ],
             *

Take Backup to Secure Laravel Data

We have explained how to set up the laravel app, install the spatie plugin and its basic configurations; now, we are ready to take backup.

But before that, let us swiftly reset laravel’s configuration cache; you may use the below command to clear the config cache.

php artisan config:clear

It is simple to take backup; make sure to execute the following command.
